I began 2014 with good women at my friend’s new home in Wilmington, NC. Her microwave made me laugh.

Sometimes I’m a little slow on the uptake. Two years ago I started (but didn’t finish) a daily writing prompt project led by my friend Patti Digh (she’s amazing and human at the same time). One of the prompts involved spending the time to clean up your desk/work space as a way to invest in yourself and what you do.
I’ve been better about being able to see the surface of my desk since last summer (only because I moved my desk and had to start fresh), but today the writing prompt finally registered. I walked into my home office/sewing room and started to move, again, the two boxes in today’s photo. Finally, finally, a light came on that said, “Why don’t you unload these things? Today. RIGHT NOW! What are you waiting for?”
So I did. In almost no time. I tossed some stuff, figured out how to be less sloppy with filing until I am ready to record/account for things, and put some pictures out that really matter to me.
Thank you Patti, for this lesson, and so many others.

Patagonia in Atlanta generously donated some clothing to FACE for fundraising. My husband is so impressed by their support that he wants to get something he needs for distance biking directly from their store.
I want to introduce myself to the staffers who helped us. I decided to dress to impress.

We’ll probably set a record high temperature today in Middle Georgia.
It is hard to think about anything that is wool or cashmere (unless it is covering a cold beer).
I’ve got just enough time to tidy up what I don’t need and hope folks come out because the weather is so nice.

Every family has its own traditions. One of ours includes making sausage each year.
This is most of the 120 lbs made by four generations earlier today. It will be frozen, shared among seven households, and enjoyed until it is all gone.

There’s real skill in opening an oyster
and not hurting yourself. I don’t think
my nephew Dillon ate any, but he was
glad to help open them for those of us
who do.

I saw this car in Augusta last weekend. The future traveler also had Union Jack flags on both rear windows.

Ella wanted to paddle in my boat on Monday.
She said she would be my spare motor.
She also got to take some pictures.
Her mom is in front of us paddling The Jenny,
the kayak given to me last summer by Jenny Craigie Riffe
Earlier this summer I bought a larger kayak so I can paddle with a spare motor.
I have a feeling that before too Ella will begin building her skills in The Jenny
while an adult holds the throw rope.
