By Grace Kelley
David Cummings of Sandersville passed away on April 30, 2018 after being hit by a car while he was cycling in Washington County, Georgia. He was 58.
David was born in Decatur, GA on March 18, 1960 to David Franklin Cummings, who owned and operated Cummings Supply, and Josephine Newsom Cummings, a schoolteacher in the Washington County school system. David’s brother Newsom Cummings was born in September 1961, and the family moved to Sandersville, GA in 1964 to be near family in Warthen. David’s brother Jim Cummings was born shortly after.
David attended Sandersville Elementary, Elder Jr High, and Washington County High School, graduating as the Star Student in 1978. He attended Guilford College in Greensboro, NC and earned a Bachelor’s degree in geology in 1982. He met his wife of 33 years, Katherine Helms Cummings, at Guilford. They wed on June 23, 1984 in Charlotte, North Carolina. David studied geology at University of Kansas in Lawrence KS, earning a Master of Science in 1985. David and Katherine lived in Corvallis, Oregon for a few years and welcomed their daughter McKinsey Cummings in 1985. They moved back to Sandersville, GA and welcomed daughter Mary Michael Logue (née Cummings) in 1990.
David’s love of science served him throughout his career at Imerys in Sandersville. His colleagues recall that he would go all-out for the annual Ugly Sweater Christmas party. David was an avid outdoorsman and loved kayaking, canoeing, hiking, and cycling. He would often take his grandchildren Ella Grace Cummings 11, and Chase Thompson, 9, on canoeing and kayaking trips on the various lakes and rivers in and around Washington County. During the summers growing up, David would attend Camp High Rocks in Brevard, NC, and passed on the love of finding serenity in nature to his children and grandchildren. His daughters and nieces attended Camp Rockbrook, the all-girls sister camp to the all-boys Camp High Rocks just down the road in Brevard.
David was also an excellent cook. Like his mother and father before him, he swore by the recipes in Irma S. Rombauer’s “Joy of Cooking.” His children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews fondly remember a dessert he would make for Thanksgiving and special occasions called “Bonzo cake,” a brownie, cheesecake, and dark chocolate mousse-layered cake originated at Murphy’s in Virginia Highlands, Atlanta.
David is survived by Katherine Cummings of Sandersville, his wife of 33 years, his daughter McKinsey Cummings of Sandersville, his daughter Mary Michael Logue and son-in-law Kyle Logue of Statesboro, grandchildren Ella (11) Chase (9) and Parker (3 months), brother Newsom Cummings and sister-in-law Carol Cummings of Clermont, GA, brother Jim Cummings and sister-in-law Cathy Turner of Hillsboro, NC, sister-in-law Mary Helms of Charlotte NC, mother-in-law Mary Alice Helms of Winston Salem, NC, and The Girls Night and the Pretty Girls dinner club of Milledgeville, GA. David is preceded in death by his father Frank Cummings of Warthen, mother Josephine Newsom Cummings of Sandersville, and his grandson Brayer Logue.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Charles Almy Scholarship Fund at Guilford College (noting Geology-Charles Almy Memorial) , Altamaha Riverkeeper and the Rosa M Tarbutton Memorial Library.
